16,000 Strangers Held This Borderless Earth

Rama Mani and Alexander Schieffer travel with a single object: a small glass sphere painted by a French artist, showing Earth as seen from space — no borders, no nations, just the blue jewel itself. Over two years and counting, some sixteen thousand people have held it, and the response is always the same: faces soften, something wordless moves through the room. This image opens a story that refuses easy categorization — part pilgrimage, part love letter, part dispatch from the living edges of the world. In Chile, an eleven-year-old Pewenche girl carves bark into art and “walks with us still.” In Uganda, a young refugee who watched his mother and sister killed before his eyes built, with a dollar a week, a hand-made school for two hundred children. In the Bolivian Andes, a traditional Indigenous community asked two travelers — one Indian, one German — to become godparents to their daughter, cutting her hair for the first time in a ceremony older than any nation. What the journey keeps revealing, as the authors write, is that “we set out to visit homes — everywhere, we are being given one.” The earth, it turns out, keeps insisting we are family.
