The Women Putting Community at the Heart of Elephant Conservation
“I do not own the land. The land owns me. I am merely the caretaker for my generation.”

The Women Putting Community at the Heart of Elephant Conservation

When Dorothy Lowakutuk drove through the night across rain-soaked Kenyan plains to reach a bruised, newborn elephant, she was doing something that no Samburu woman had done before – and quietly reshaping what conservation, leadership, and belonging could look like for her community. At Africa’s first Indigenous-owned elephant sanctuary, the bond between keeper and calf turns out to be only the most visible thread in a much larger weaving: 1,250 local women now earn their own incomes supplying goat milk, many holding bank accounts for the first time, while elephant numbers in the region have grown from a few hundred to more than 6,000 in three decades. Lowakutuk credits the elephants themselves for teaching her something she carries into every corner of her life: “Leadership has to grow from inside you, and then you’re chosen by your good deeds, not your bad ones.” What Reteti reveals is that conservation, at its most honest, is not a project imposed on a landscape but a relationship grown from within it – and that when the people who walk the land every day are trusted to protect it, something larger than wildlife is restored.

Be The Change

Think of a local conservation effort, community garden, or environmental initiative near you that’s led by people from the neighborhood itself — then look it up today and learn one thing about how it’s governed or who benefits from it. Dorothy Lowakutuk’s story reminds us that “the people best placed to protect a landscape are the ones who walk it every day.”
