Tanzania’s First Official Wildlife Corridor Is Good News for Elephants

In Tanzania’s Kilombero Valley, 368 farmers voluntarily gave up portions of their land so that elephants could walk safely between mountain rainforests and open savanna — a negotiation seven years in the making that resulted in the country’s first officially protected wildlife corridor. Trail cameras installed across its 14-kilometer length have already recorded 529 elephants passing through, along with more than 900 other mammals, months ahead of expectations. What makes the corridor’s future most credible is not the fencing or the funding, but the villagers themselves, whom one researcher describes as “advocates for nature” — people who insisted on native tree species, flagged the flaws in well-meaning but misguided restoration plans, and now co-manage the land alongside the government. One conservationist planted trees inside the corridor with his young son and found himself imagining the forest it will become when the boy is grown: “That’s what all this is really for,” he said. “Safeguarding the planet for the next generation.” Rooted in that quiet gesture is the whole logic of the project — that people who share land with wild things, given real responsibility and real respect, will often choose to protect them.

Be The Change

Today, find a map of your region and trace the green spaces, parks, waterways, or wild patches that still connect to one another — and notice where those connections are broken by roads, parking lots, or development. Sitting with that image, consider one local conservation effort, land trust, or rewilding initiative nearby, and send them a single message of encouragement or gratitude.
