The Boar Who Slept in the Rain for Britney

Britney the pig had spent years alone in a backyard, and the damage showed: she hid in a shelter, threatening any creature who came close with a grunt that made even humans back away. Then Don Juan (“Donny”) arrived — a Kune Kune boar of gentle, unhurried steadiness — and instead of joining the other nine welcoming pigs, he lay down right in front of her shelter and simply stayed. Day and night. Through wind and rain. Through every grunt and squeal she threw at him. Andreas Nussbaumer, who with his wife Elisabeth stewards a sanctuary for 150 rescued animals in Weppersdorf, Austria, writes that “sometimes, all it takes is someone who stays until fear gives way to trust.” The same farm offers another quiet teaching: when snails devoured certain plants overnight while leaving others untouched, Andreas noticed the pattern — it was always the weakened ones that fell. So they stopped fighting the snails and focused on building strong roots instead. The lesson traveled far beyond the vegetable rows: wars, injustice, and the relentless scroll of bad news won’t disappear by force of will, but we can tend to our own soil — our bodies, our relationships, our capacity for presence and laughter. These are not tidy parables wrapped up with a bow; they are the observations of someone who traded seminar rooms and five flights a week for mud, animal noise, and a slower, deeper kind of knowing.

Be The Change

Identify one source of world-noise — a news feed, a conversation spiral, a worry loop — that has been quietly draining you, and replace just thirty minutes of it today with something that feeds your roots: perhaps a walk, a meal made slowly, or a conversation with someone who steadies you.
