She Lost Her Memory, Then It All Came Back

At fifteen, Ruth Brigandi woke up without language, without a name, without any sense of where her body ended and the world began. For four months, she existed in a state of pure, undifferentiated presence — no emotions, no thoughts, no self. Modern medicine attributed it to inflammation in the pituitary gland. But what she describes is not frightening, exactly: “it was just a peaceful stage.” The terror came later, when memory flooded back all at once — the thoughts, the emotions, the crushing weight of having an identity again. She spent years fighting her way out of a depression so severe she wanted to end her life, pulled forward by two thin threads: a list of practical tasks written with her father, and the love she felt for her family. Now in her forties and directing a consciousness research foundation in Barcelona, she has spent two decades making sense of what that emptiness gave her — including an effortless access to meditation, because she can simply return, in memory, to what it felt like to be a human being without a mind. The piece closes not with triumph but with something quieter: a woman who built a life of relentless intensity to stay alive, learning, at last, to loosen the reins. “We have time,” she says, “if we take it.”
