Meeting the Man Responsible for Her Son’s Death

Joan Scourfield’s son, James, died from a single punch over a pair of sunglasses, leaving her with nothing but rage and unanswered questions about the man who killed him. Through a restorative justice program, she eventually met Jacob Dunne, the man responsible for the fatal punch. In their face-to-face meeting, she found not the monster from the mugshot but “a vulnerable young man” who wanted to answer for what he’d done.
