On Courage

What does it mean to be courageous? Is it something seen outwardly, as when someone overcomes an overwhelming physical obstacle, or is it "the measure of our heartfelt participation with life, with another, with a community, a work, a future"? This short video provides an eloquent answer through powerful images that encourage further consideration of the question.

News from The Pema Chödrön Foundation
View as Webpage

Dear friends,

As 2019 draws to a close, we are delighted to bring you an update on Pema’s activities, as well as the activities of The Foundation. It has once again been a wonderful year for Pema and the Pema Chödrön Foundation. Thanks to the generosity of so many of you, we have been able to support many wonderfully compassionate projects dear to Pema’s heart. With your continued kindness, we look forward to supporting even more programs in 2020.

Please consider donating again as a part of your year end giving.

News of Pema
Pema is doing extraordinarily well! Her new book, Welcoming the Unwelcome, was released in October, and has been described as “an open-hearted call for human connection, compassion, and learning to love the world just as it is during these most challenging times”. In addition, Pema’s 2018 talk “Creating a Culture of Tenderness”, with Father Gregory Boyle of Homeboy Industries, is now available on CD through our bookstore here, as well as online here.

Having recently completed her annual 100-day retreat in Colorado, Pema will soon head to Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia for Yarne, or winter teachings.

Pema will be teaching again next year at Omega Institute, May 8-10, 2020, on “Three Steps to Courage”. This program has already filled, but you can request to be put on the waiting list by emailing registration, or by calling Omega at 877-944-2002.

The program will once again be offered as a live-stream option, and registration details are available here.

The Foundation’s Projects
Supporting Nuns
It is Pema’s deepest wish that Buddhist nuns are able to receive the full training and education needed to fully realize the wisdom of the tradition and to carry it into the future. It’s vital that these nuns receive the same education and support as their male counterparts. With your help, The Pema Chödrön Foundation is making this wish a reality. Please help to support the nuns projects we sponsor. A donation of any amount would be appreciated tremendously. Read more about the nuns we support:

Tsoknyi Gechak Ling Nunnery

Tibetan Nuns Project

Updates! A second group of Nuns is halfway through their intensive 3-year retreat at Sher Gompa high in the Annapurna mountains of Nepal.
Additionally, with our support,40 nuns from The Tibetan Nuns Project recently passed their rigorous exams to complete their Geshema degrees. Watch a short video clip about their remarkable accomplishments here.

Our deepest gratitude to all who have supported these wonderful projects!

Supporting At-risk populations
Pema remains eager to do as much as she can to support and uplift at-risk communities. The Pema Chödrön Foundation has again provided a grant in 2019 toMalezi School in Nairobi, Kenya, in one of the poorest slums in the area. Our increased support has not only expanded their meals program, but has allowed them to retain teachers by increasing wages. Nourishing these children with breakfast and lunch, and providing continuity with their beloved teachers, has had a profound impact on their opportunity to learn and their overall well being. Watch a short clip about the Malezi School Meals Program here.

The Foundation also continues to support the wonderful efforts of Homeboy Industries, Prison Mindfulness Institute, iGrow Chicago, Lotus International, and several programs supporting homeless youth. Please visit our website to learn more about these programs, and consider making a contribution here.

The Book Initiative
The Book Initiative is continuing the grow! The PCF has sent thousands of Pema’s books at no cost to prisons, hospitals, counseling centers, homeless shelters, and individuals around the world. Thanks to a grant from Donaldson Trust, and the support of many of you who believe in this project, our outreach has grown beyond our wildest dreams. Please consider supporting this wonderful program here.
Planned Giving
As you prepare your will or trust, please consider including the Pema Chödrön Foundation. Your planned generosity will have a great impact for years to come, and insure that Pema’s work continues well into the future. Please contact Tim@PemaChodronFoundation.org for more information.

The Lost Words

The limits of my language means the limits of my world.

– Ludwig Wittgenstein –

The Lost Words

“It had come to our attention that words were slipping out from the mouths and the minds of children, but it was only once the book was complete and beginning to make its way out into the world that this really hit home. In a class full of children I asked who knew what a wren was. Wren, that small brown bird, feathers small as splinters with a sharp song so loud that threads its way through hedges in parks and gardens. Not one. Not even the teacher. An absence of knowledge.” Award-winning writer and illustrator Jackie Morris shares more. { read more }
