Standing in Authentic Power

Real power is usually unspectacular, a simple setting aside of fear that allows the free flow of love. But it changes everything.

– Martha Beck –

Standing in Authentic Power

Stacey Lawson relates how real power is within, and takes inner work and outer action, and how sometimes it’s hard to understand why following inner guidance leads us on a path that doesn’t end where we might have wished. She explains how during meditation she repeatedly received a powerful call to run for political office, and while it was the last thing she wanted to do, and after strong resistance, she ultimately ran. “The thought of actually saying no and turning my back on that felt so paralyzingly flat or disconnected. I knew I had to step in.” During a campaign event, a stranger walked up to her and said, “I hate you.” Stacey’s response surprised even herself, and helped her realize that standing in our power is “doing what’s called for and doing it with love,” even when we may never know the reason why. { read more }

In an African tribe, as legend goes, a child’s birthdate is marked not by the day of birth, but by the moment the child was first thought of in the mother’s mind. When a woman decides to have a child, she retreats alone beneath a tree — listening until she hears the song of the child who wants to come. As the child is born, the village gathers, embracing her with that sacred song. And throughout the child’s journey, through the trials of puberty, the heights of accomplishments, and the depths of tribulations, even when she strays far from herself, the community surrounds her, singing her song to guide her back. And when her time on earth comes to an end, they lift their voices one last time, honoring her spirit with the song that first brought her into being.
newstory24.gif What is your sacred song? Beginning June 9th, we invite you to join us in a 21-day New Story Challenge, where we explore the latest renditions of our song, become keepers of each other’s melodies, and align our rhythms with the subtler hum of the universe. For 21 days, you will receive a unique prompt each day, guiding you to share a story from your life with kin from around the globe. In the first week, we will delve into our roots, the second week will immerse us in the present, and the final week will gaze over the horizon to the future. Plus a lot more, like weekly calls and inspiring speakers! Join 21-day New Story Challenge here.

Weathering the Storm: How Horses Teach Us Community

The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.

– Audrey Hepburn –

Weathering the Storm: How Horses Teach Us Community

It was going to be a particularly important day for a healing ceremony with horses. Participants would experience community for the first time in a long time due to the covid lockdown. “Many of those present were single people. They hadn’t had any human contact since the lockdown. No one to get a hug from. No one to hold their hand.” They connected again through meditation, and some began to interact with the horses. Yet, there was a separation. “It was a continuation of the lockdown that made us feel separate even as we were together.” Then the skies opened up to a blinding wind and rain as an intense summer storm suddenly blew in. The way the horses responded taught them a profound lesson on the power of community. { read more }

Be The Change

Remember a time you felt held. Perhaps it was simply someone showing they cared, the way a favorite furry friend looked at you, or maybe it was just a little unexpected hug. How can you pass that feeling on to someone else?

2701.jpgEnlightenment is like the moon reflected in the water. The moon does not get wet, nor is the water broken. Although its light is wide and great, the moon is reflected even in a puddle an inch wide. The whole moon and the entire sky are reflected in dewdrops on the grass, or even in one drop of water. Enlightenment does not divide you, just as the moon does not break the water. You cannot hinder enlightenment, just as a drop of water does not hinder the moon in the sky. The depth of the drop is the height of the moon. Each reflection, however long or short its duration, manifests the vastness of the dewdrop, and realizes the limitlessness of the moonlight in the sky.

When you sail out in a boat to the midst of an ocean where no land is in sight, and view the four directions, the ocean looks circular, and does not look any other way. But the ocean is neither round nor square; its features are infinite in variety. It is like a palace. It is like a jewel. It only looks circular as far as you can see at that time. All things are like this. Though there are many features in the dusty world and the world beyond conditions, you see and understand only what your eye of practice can reach. In order to learn the nature of the myriad things, you must know that although they may look round or square, the other features of oceans and mountains are infinite in variety; whole worlds are there. It is so not only around you, but also directly beneath your feet, or in a drop of water.

A fish swims in the ocean, and no matter how far it swims there is no end to the water. A bird flies in the sky, and no matter how far it flies, there is no end to the air. However, the fish and the bird have never left their elements. When their activity is large their field is large. When their need is small their field is small. Thus, each of them totally covers its full range, and each of them totally experiences its· realm. If the bird leaves the air it will die at once. If the fish leaves the water it will die at once. Know that water is life and air is life. The bird is life and the fish is life. Life must be the bird and life must be the fish. It is possible to illustrate this with more analogies.

Practice, enlightenment, and people are like this.

Now if a bird or a fish tries to reach the end of its element before moving in it, this bird or this fish will not find its way or its place. When you find your place where you are, practice occurs, actualizing the fundamental point. When you find your way at this moment, practice occurs, actualizing the fundamental point; for the place, the way, is neither large nor small, neither yours nor others’. The place, the way, has not carried over from the past, and it is not merely arising now. Accordingly, in the practice-enlightenment of the buddha way, meeting one thing is mastering it; doing one practice is practicing completely.

Here is the place; here the way unfolds. The boundary of realization is not distinct, for the realization comes forth simultaneously with the mastery of dharma. Do not suppose that what you realize becomes your knowledge and is grasped by your consciousness. Although actualized immediately, the inconceivable may not be distinctly apparent. Its appearance is beyond your knowledge.

Zen master Baoche of Mount Mayu was fanning himself. A monk approached and said, "Master, the nature of wind is permanent and there is no place it does not reach. Why, then do you fan yourself?" "Although you understand that the nature of wind is permanent;" Baoche replied, "you do not understand the meaning of its reaching everywhere." "What is the meaning of its reaching everywhere?" asked the monk again. The master just kept fanning himself. The monk bowed deeply. The actualization of the dharma, the vital path of its correct transmission, is like this.

How do you relate to the notion of enlightenment? Can you share a story of a time you understood the nature of something in its element? What helps you avoid assuming that what you realize becomes your knowledge?

From Green to Health

Interested in boosting your heath naturally? Research highlights the direct connection between our health and time spent in green spaces: nature holds the power to reduce stress and depressive symptoms, to fortify our immune system, to lower our blood pressure and improve sleep. With low-income communities frequently deprived of such green spaces, this points to an untapped potential to address health disparities. Let’s dive into why going green isn’t just about the environment, but our personal health, too. { read more }

Breathing with the Forest

If we are to use our tools in the service of fitting in on Earth, our basic relationship to nature–even the story we tell ourselves about who we are in the universe–has to change.

– Janine M. Benyus –

Breathing with the Forest

‘Breathing with the Forest’ is an immersive digital experience that explores the illusion of separation between us and the rest of the planet, a reminder that “with each breath we exchange parts of ourselves with the wider world.” The Capinuri tree grows in the Amazon river floodplain where the Breathing experience creators photographed and collected three-dimensional scans and audio recordings of the wind, trees, animals and water. Capturing the individual elements demonstrates the beauty of each individual living object; in relayering them for the experience, however, the creators demonstrate the opportunity available to notice how they interact; an invitation to appreciate the symbiosis of living alongside one another. “Entering the forest, we step out of our separateness to embody something much more than human.” { read more }

What Should I Do Today?

The cost of doing anything is life because our time, our energy, our attention, all of those things are finite. Our choice to do anything has a cost, and that cost is our life.

– Adii Pienaar –

What Should I Do Today?

Finding moments of meaning and purpose amidst everyday chaos can feel like a daunting task. This article serves as a compass for navigating the complexities of daily life by embracing intentionality and mindful decision-making with a simple yet profound question: “What should I do today?” Rather than succumbing to the pressures of productivity or routine, we are encouraged to approach each day with a sense of curiosity and purpose. Among nine ways to start of living an intentional life are taking time to do nothing and considering what we leave behind at the end of a life. { read more }

Be The Change

Conscience and Courage: A Conversation with Lee Hoinacki

I believe that much in the world around us is designed against experience. For example, the experience of actually touching the soil. How many times do we actually take off our shoes and walk on the dirt?

Conscience and Courage: A Conversation with Lee Hoinacki

A brief note only hints at the wide horizon of this former Dominican priest, professor, author, prison dishwasher — and perhaps Ivan Illich’s closest friend. One example: “From the time of Descartes on, people in the west have had increasing difficulty in being in contact with their own bodies. How many times do we even open a window?” { read more }

How Luck and Chance Shape Our Lives

Our lives are themselves random: chance encounters, events and the accumulation of accidents being the defining features of our span upon this earth.

– James Bridle –

How Luck and Chance Shape Our Lives

Professor, podcaster, and author Bob McKinnon explores how Mark Robert Rank calls into question some prevalent cultural beliefs. A couple of them are: “the idea of rugged individualism and meritocracy” and the perception that the “world is just, that what we get in life we deserve, either good or bad.” We tend to apply “luck or chance to individuals and randomness to system wide things.” Yet, while we like to think we are in control, random factors significantly impact our lives. The book gives numerous examples from major historical events (a ten-mile difference in an asteroid’s path, and dinosaurs would still roam) to our personal lives including who our parents are, when and where we are born, our first and last names, and financial circumstances to name a few. One of his random thoughts: “The recognition of randomness ensures that we do not take the good things in life for granted, and it allows us to understand the precarious nature of good fortune.” { read more }

Be The Change
