Ask Him Anything

Mansoor Shams is a 34 year old U.S. Marine. He’s also a Muslim whose family immigrated to America when he was just 6-years-old. In "Ask Him Anything: This Muslim Marine Wants to Bust Myths About His Faith" from PBS News Hour, Shams travels to 4 western U.S. cities to combat prejudice and open up a dialogue about the fears and prejudices people may have about Muslims and immigrants, often finding common ground with those who stop to talk to him. The xenophobia that has come to the forefront since the 2016 US election inspired him to do something to breakdown stereotypes, "It’s helped me to see another America that I thought we had gone far past," he explains.

When a Stranger Becomes a Lifelong Friend
“What we need is love and kindness.”

— Beni Lukumu

When a Stranger Becomes a Lifelong Friend

While skateboarding near the University of Texas, college freshmen Joey Romano found himself injured, alone, and lying on a street. He made an unexpected but life-changing choice: he called an Uber. “I didn’t have very good insurance, and I was worried about the cost,” Romano, now 29, explained. When Beni Lukumu, the Uber driver, learned that Romano had no family nearby, he did more than just offer a ride; he stayed with Joey through his entire recovery at the hospital, becoming the unsung hero Joey never knew he needed. “That one act of kindness helped me see the good in the world again,” Joey shares, reflecting on how Beni’s warmth and generosity pulled him from a dark period in life following the loss of his brother. Seven years after Romano’s injury, the two men’s bond continues to shine today, elucidating how a single moment of understanding can forge lifelong friendships. In a divided world, Beni offers a shiningly simple reminder: “What we need is love and kindness.”

What Happens When You Trade Doomscrolling for Hopescrolling
“Whatever we put our attention on will grow stronger in our life.”

— Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

What Happens When You Trade Doomscrolling for Hopescrolling

Psychologists define doomscrolling as “the compulsive act of endlessly scrolling through negative or distressing news on social media, often leading to heightened anxiety or stress…” This is by design to capture and keep our attention, and “attacks us where we’re most vulnerable by taking advantage of our innate need to scan our environment for threats.” In an attempt to counter doomscrolling, Jennifer Mercieca, professor of communication and journalism, created hopescroll – looking for positive news. “Intentionally reading solutions journalism inspired my students to become better critical thinkers about the media content they consume and gave them hope that solutions to our problems are possible.” Other suggestions include being intentional on how you spend your time online, setting limits on your media time, and subscribing to non-outrage-based news and solutions-based journalism.

Bouquets And Brickbats

68c8d6d4c7b2a-2758.jpgGuru Nanak, the first Guru of the Sikhs, shared a message that was radical for his day. He questioned empty rituals, exposed the hypocrisy of the powerful, and encouraged ordinary people to rise above the endless chase for material wants.

He journeyed across forests, rivers, and deserts, facing extreme weather and resistance. By his side was Bhai Mardana, carrying his rebec (a stringed instrument). Guru Nanak expressed his teachings in verses, born of Divine inspiration. With Bhai Mardana’s music, these verses flowed into song.

One day, Bhai Mardana sat unusually quiet, rolling a stone in his hand. Seeing his troubled face, Guru Nanak asked gently,
“Why do you look so lost today?”

Bhai Mardana hesitated, then spoke: “Sometimes a storm rises in my mind, and I cannot make sense of it. We travel to so many places. In some, strangers welcome you warmly, refusing to let you go. But in others, people curse you, mock you—even turn hostile. Why is it like that? Why don’t they see you the same way?”

Guru Nanak listened, then said, “I will answer your question. But first, take this stone to the market and see what you can get for it.”

Puzzled, Bhai Mardana obeyed. At the market, there were shops selling sweets, vegetables, cloth and more. He went first to the sweet-seller, who looked at the stone, laughed, and told him to move along. At the grain shop, the busy seller waved him away, saying he had customers to attend to. At the vegetable stall, the vendor was amused, but handed him an onion just to get rid of him.

Finally, he entered the shop of Salas Rai, the jeweler. As soon as Salas Rai saw the stone, his eyes lit up.

“This is no ordinary stone—it’s a ruby! I cannot pay its full worth, but if you allow me a closer look, I can offer you one hundred rupees.”

Bhai Mardana returned with the money, astonished. “What does this mean?” he asked.

Guru Nanak explained, “Truth is like this gem. Many will dismiss it as worthless. But those who truly recognize it – know it is beyond price.”

We often hear about the rewards of walking the right path. But less often do we prepare for the brickbats that come with it. Truth is not valued universally. You may face ridicule, rejection, or even hostility.

Yet if you know the value of the gem in your hand, you will not let go. Along the way, bouquets and brickbats are par for the course.

What do you make of the notion that truth, like a rare gem, might be dismissed by many as worthless, yet is priceless for those who recognize it? Can you share a personal story that reflects a time when you faced ridicule or rejection while standing up for something you believed was valuable and true? What helps you remain steadfast in your pursuit of truth and maintain your resolve, even when facing criticism or hostility from others?

This Week’s DailyGood Digest

This past week, stories unfolded like petals, revealing unexpected blooms of humanity and transformation.

In the sunlit corners of Desmond and Leané Wells’ backyard, two dikkops, Hansie and Grietjie, found a sanctuary-a tale woven not just from warmth but from the quiet resolve of shared care. In the heart of Boksburg, a bakkie full of love brings nourishment to those less fortunate, as community advocate Anché Moore and her network transform compassion into action. In the outskirts of Bengaluru, Vidyakshetra reimagines education as a shared journey, where children weave, sing, and grow food in place of following the traditional path of exams and rankings. In the quiet corridors of resilience, 22-year-old Rupam Sonali transformed her grief into an unyielding promise, proving that knowledge’s path can be blazed with sheer will. In the quiet town of Boonah, Queensland, a minibus brimming with excited dogs transforms lives, crafting dream jobs for young people living with disabilities and those from at-risk backgrounds. Popi, an orphaned orangutan, finds her way back to the wild after nine years of tender, vigilant care at the Borneo Orangutan Rescue Alliance’s ‘Jungle School.’ In Traiskirchen, Austria, amidst the echoes of once-overcrowded refugee centers, a garden blooms as a testament to resilience and community, offering hope, dignity, and belonging. Each story this week speaks to the enduring power of belief and determination, inviting us to trust in the journey of hard work meeting opportunity.

“To leave the world better than you found it, sometimes you have to pick up other people’s trash.”

He Quit His Job to Start a Nonprofit to Pick up Trash Across the City

Juan Eduardo Naula moved to Los Angeles for a job opportunity that turned out to be a scam. Obviously, he was disheartened. He began picking up trash from the streets, and found it therapeutic. Juan even built receptacles for the neighborhood. He took a new job, but soon quit in order to pick up trash, relying on donations and people to keep his operation going, while inspiring others to clean up their own streets. Juan’s social media following grew to nearly 50,000 followers, and some join him each week to literally pick up garbage across L.A. “Hopefully, we can have a thousand people start doing this. That would be awesome. We can make a club,” Naula said. “I really love what I’m doing. I really love coming to the place that’s really dirty and cleaning up and seeing the difference.”

8 Active Ingredients of Tai Chi

Often coined as “meditation in motion,” the ancient art of tai chi offers more than just a workout; it’s a journey into self-awareness, intention, and interconnectedness. Peter M. Wayne, Harvard Medical School’s Bernard Osher Associate Professor, illuminates eight core principles that balance body, mind, and spirit, fostering resilience in the chaos of everyday life. Picture yourself, rooted like a tree, living with an intentional focus. This “emotional form of self defense,” as Wayne calls it, can offer insights to reshape perspectives, proving that even small, deliberate movements can ripple into presence.

Are You Willing to Be MADE NOTHING?

Are You Willing to Be MADE NOTHING?

Losing one’s memory is like being cancelled. We can deny this change in life for others and ourselves, or we can learn to embrace this change while remembering “you are still the person you spent your life becoming.” Every moment matters and counts but the truth is that life moves so quickly, and we often get so caught up in the day-to-day hustle that we forget to say the things that truly matter. This film is a reminder to enjoy every moment right now since it is all we really have. It’s easy to assume there will always be more time to express how we feel, but the truth is, life is unpredictable, and none of us knows how much time we have with the people we care about. That’s why telling the people we love how much they mean to us, right here and now, is so important. So don’t hesitate—show your heart, share your love, and make it a habit to remind the people around you how much they mean to you. You never know how much they might need to hear it.

Hosting The Pain Of The World

–Thomas Huebl

Listen to Audio Translations RSVP for Awakin Circle
68bf80b7dbb9f-2755.jpgWhen we begin to access fields of collective trauma to begin the healing process together, we often become aware of those who have passed away, often in violent circumstances. Their presence may be palpable in the social fabric until the transgression has been re-owned by those who are living, allowing these souls to rest in peace. Often, societies try to hide or look away from this collective pain, which is why the integration process gets stuck. Looking away from the pain means we can’t be present with each other; metaphorically, we are dispersed in space and time.

When we as humanity are not fully present to what is happening now, and what has not been resolved in the past, we become obsessed with looking forward. We become hypnotized by the idea of building or getting to a better world in the future because we can’t be with the world as it is happening now. This is an important defense mechanism that helps us to not feel the pain or deal with past transgressions. However, if we don’t examine those consciously, we will stay fragmented and re-traumatization will occur. The only way we can build a better world is to build it in this world. We need to use every moment to co-create the world we wish to live in instead of wishing for it to happen tomorrow.

In a traumatized world, redemption happens later: The glance toward the future is the missing embodiment in the now, where we integrate the pain into presence to receive the blessing of the real future, the world that we download together as and in presence. True innovation always happens now.

FB TW IN
What do you make of the notion that we must re-own past transgressions to allow healing and peace for those who suffered and for the living? Can you share a personal story of a time you felt the need to confront past pain in order to be truly present and move forward? What helps you remain grounded in the present moment, especially when the allure of future possibilities seems overwhelming?

Across continents, five indomitable women lead their communities in battles against cultural and environmental erosion, embodying the spirit of the Beijing Declaration. Troy Motsime’s Kilimanjaro journey transcends personal ambition, channeling his climb into a mission of compassion and support. In India, Vivek Menon’s dedication to protecting elephant corridors reflects a lifelong commitment to coexistence and conservation. Finally, crochet varmalas redefine Indian wedding traditions, offering a sustainable and enduring alternative to ephemeral floral garlands, crafted with care by skilled artisans.
