Kids Raise Thousands for Texas Flood Relief with Lemonade Stands

After devastating flash floods in Texas dislodged buildings and claimed over 100 lives late last week, young hearts across the US state are alchemizing their shock and grief into concrete disaster aid. Through something as simple and profound as homemade lemonade stands, children have managed to raise thousands of dollars for the affected families and camps. From the earnest endeavors of 14-year-old Brylee Livesay to the enterprising vision of 9-year-old Corrigan and Cannon Camp, these children transform tragedy into tangible hope. The community’s response has been heartwarming, with neighbors eager to contribute to the cause. One parent, Anjali Patel, noted it was “the perfect opportunity to teach my son about giving back,” and her son’s stand raised funds for therapeutic support for victims. In the face of natural disaster, the genuine goodwill is a beautiful reminder that anyone, regardless of age, can make a significant impact.

Italian ‘Ghost Town’ Rescued by Instagramable Street Art Which Attracts Thousands

Like many small towns where people have fewer children, and grown children move away to cities, Stomara, a southern Italian hamlet, was referred to as a ghost town. It saddened a local artist, Lino Lombardi, who decided to do something. “In 2017 he created Stramurales, an annual street art festival that sees artists from around the world come to paint murals in the town.” There are now 140 murals as interest has grown with thousands of people visiting every year. “More importantly than a temporary tourist-season boom, the town’s population has stopped declining and begun to grow again as young families move back, locals say.” New businesses have opened, and revenue has increased. Other towns are looking to Stomara for help. Lombardi said, “Our community has painted itself back to life, one wall at a time.”

Imagination Is Not Day-Dreaming

Imagination Is Not Day-Dreaming

–Phoebe Tickell

Listen to Audio Translations RSVP for Awakin Circle
686c13d019234-2747.jpgImagination is a superpower. Every single change in society started in somebody’s imagination — or in a small group’s collective imagination — from women getting the vote, to the civil rights movement or better services for healthcare. Some say it’s the quality that makes us most uniquely human — especially our ability to collectively imagine the new.

But imagination is not recognised for what it is — the star stuff of truly radical innovation that builds a new world into being. It’s often dismissed as something associated with day-dreaming, fantasy and fiction. If a job candidate put “imagination” on their CV, it would certainly raise eyebrows. As early as school, we are told off for daydreaming, reinforcing from the start that this is someway a pointless or indulgent activity. What if this carried on throughout life with our organisational and civic systems constantly narrowing out imagination, rather than recognising its true importance?

It’s natural that in a period of austerity, imagination falls to the bottom of priorities. As we face scarcity and insurmountable challenges, people focus on efficiency, practical deliverables and getting things done. Imagination is seen as a distraction, something wooly and perhaps relevant for an away day, but not core to the building of new policy and systems.

Imagine if we’re wrong. As temperatures hit record level in the UK this week, there is a growing sense that we have lost our way. Things have gone wrong — and we need to put them right. But how do we do that when policies, responsibility, vision and action seem to be stuck in a gridlock? How can we solve some of these deep rooted problems — if we use the same approaches we will get the same answers we have always got.

The challenges we face are incredibly complex and cannot be solved by any one individual or solution alone. Just like a bee goes out to search many different locations for the perfect place for its hive before committing to one of them, so too the mind needs to wander and explore the different possibilities before choosing a way forward. Our imaginations can be incredibly helpful to paint different scenarios in our head and test them out through simulations.

How do you relate to the notion that imagination, often dismissed as daydreaming or fantasy, is actually the “star stuff” of truly radical innovation that builds a new world into being? Can you share a personal story that involved using your imagination to navigate a particularly challenging situation, leading to an unexpected or innovative solution? What helps you cultivate a habit of allowing your mind to wander and explore different possibilities, much like a bee searching for the perfect location for its hive, in order to unlock creative solutions to complex problems?

Meet the Bicycle Mayors Making Cities Around the World More Bike-Friendly

In cities worldwide, Bicycle Mayors like Maren Ahlers in Addis Ababa are pedaling for change, making urban areas more bike-friendly and sustainable. Ahlers, originally avoiding public transport with her bike, now leads a movement that has taught over a hundred women to cycle and advocates for cycling infrastructure. With the title of Bicycle Mayor, these leaders bridge the gap between communities and governments, advocating for safer streets and environmental benefits. Ahlers envisions accessible cycling with local workshops and an importer for affordable bikes. As she says, “If there wouldn’t be any cyclists, they would have not done it, probably.” From Critical Mass rides to grassroots initiatives, cycling activists are reshaping urban life with passion and persistence.

Dream Home From 8,000 Glass Bottles on the Beach
“If we build a society based on honoring the Earth, we build a society which is sustainable and has the capacity to support all life forms.”

— Winona LaDuke

Dream Home From 8,000 Glass Bottles on the Beach

In the stunning coastal paradise of Itamaracá, Brazil, mother-daughter duo Edna and Maria Gabrielly Dantas, transformed a beach revelation into an eco-friendly marvel: a seven-room home built from 8,000 upcycled glass bottles that they picked up from the beach. These visionary women saw not waste, but opportunity. Edna stated, “These bottles aren’t going to disappear. Without policies to regulate their production or penalize abandonment, the least we can do is find ways to reuse them.” Despite facing the challenges of discrimination, they crafted Casa De Sal as a testament to ingenuity and resilience, even starting workshops to share their sustainable methods and an accessory brand built on reused materials. Today, Casa De Sal is even listed as a destination on AirBnB. Their story is not only about environmental activism but about reclaiming a legacy, where respecting nature intertwines with a history of survival.

Most people think of money when they consider giving to others. But "thinking about giving only in terms of money is like thinking about love only in terms of diamonds". Diamonds are flashy, but love is so much wider and deeper. Learn how generosity can be at the root of the smallest of your daily decisions to become the roots of something radical.

Wikipedia and the Ecology of Free Knowledge
“If you can connect people, you can create the future.”

— Scott Heiferman

Wikipedia and the Ecology of Free Knowledge

Less than twenty-five years ago, people primarily consulted encyclopedias when they wanted information. Launched in 2001, “Wikipedia, is now accessed every day by more than forty-six million mobile devices and more than twenty-three million users on desktop computers.” Remarkably, it thrives due to tens of thousands of volunteers, and a skeletal staff who create and edit it within a few stated guidelines. Kevin Kelly, Wired magazine, says Wikipedia shows “how the underlying force of Nature’s symbiotic, mutual benefit pattern can operate when human intelligence and computer intelligence maximize each other’s attributes…” The article concludes: “The very act of connecting people’s minds on a global scale, with virtually no physical, geographical limit and no central authority, and with an open-ended, self-organizing feedback loop, is an evolutionary game-changer.”

The Great Unflattening?
Join New Story Pod arrow_btn_white.png
Dear Friends,

In Flatland, a 19th-century novel, a humble square lives in a two-dimensional world. One day, it meets a mysterious visitor—a sphere. But the square, limited by its flat perception, sees only a circle growing and shrinking, unable to grasp the fuller dimension right before its eyes. So too, we humans are shaped by the limits of our senses and systems. Bees see ultraviolet. Platypuses sense electric fields. And here we are—scrolling through endless rectangles of distraction—risking a great forgetting. Forgetting that we are not pixels or profiles, but pulsing, multidimensional beings.

In a world seduced by speed, shaped by transactions, and flattened by algorithmic certainty, what happens to wonder? To grace? To the quiet symphony of nuance and mystery that once guided our becoming?

What Your Unique Breath-Print Says About You
“When you consciously decide to breathe more slowly and deeply, you alert your body to the fact that you want it to behave differently.”

— Eric Maisel

What Your Unique Breath-Print Says About You

Similar to fingerprints, researchers suspect “that your patterns of breathing through your nose are so distinctive that it may be possible to identify you by breath alone, suggesting we have ‘breath prints.’” Since breathing is tied to many bodily functions, the study may lead to “understanding what’s behind the idiosyncratic breathing patterns.” Breathing exercises are traditionally recommended for anxiety and for relaxation. While it is still speculative, researchers will study “exactly what a healthier pattern of breath looks like, both as a way to identify illness and to explore whether people can be taught ways of breathing that might change their biology.”
