“Almost 60 years ago, professor Frederick Sontag opened a door I could not have opened on my own. Perhaps it saved my life. On a visit to Claremont, California 30 years later, I proposed interviewing him. He graciously accepted. Revisiting it today, I’m amazed at its relevance, particularly as the November election is almost upon those in the US. He says, ‘America has gone through odysseys, through trials of tribulation and wandering, and I think we’re onto one of those times again.'” { read more }

Responsibility of Rocking the Boat

A 1976 industry article recommended: “Forget the pig is an animal—treat it just like a machine in a factory.” Gestation crates, so restrictive pigs could not even turn around, came to dominate. Laws for ethical treatment followed and companies declared commitments to humane treatment, but some did not keep their word. That led to the founding of The Accountability Board to hold companies accountable. The Accountability Board engages with companies “to enhance corporate transparency, improve board governance, mitigate risks associated with material concerns (like climate change and animal cruelty), and more.” When engagements do not produce results, they file proposals that help spotlight areas where companies are not keeping their word, so that shareholders may take action. { read more }

An Awe Walk

If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if a blade of grass has the power to move you, rejoice, for your soul is alive.

An Awe Walk

A study on the effects of an “awe walk” revealed people found awe in the ordinary such as “a friend’s generosity, a leafy tree’s play of light and shadow on a sidewalk, a song that transported them back to a first love.” They found that even a few moments of awe can “reduce stress, decrease inflammation, and benefit the cardiovascular system.” They also reported less distress and more compassion and amusement. In an “awe walk,” people are asked to tap into a childlike sense of wonder, notice both the panoramic and the detail, and go somewhere new or notice something new. Awe-walkers felt more awe the more they practiced. “We are well served by opening ourselves to awe wherever we can find it, even if only for a moment or two.” { read more }

2666.jpgIt seems that a believed thought (most often unconscious) underpinning addictions goes like this: ‘something outside of me can make me feel complete/happy or whole’.

Experiencing external phenomena continues as one tries to find what will resolve this incomplete feeling. There may even be a conscious noticing of that natural pull towards internal rest, peace and harmony. Yet mind can simultaneously run the idea that the outside world is the source of ‘solutions’. So the search for happiness continues in the outside world; hence substance abuse has its place.

The best that substances can do is shift your attention away from persistent thoughts into some level of oblivion for a while; promising a temporary holiday from the habit of believing thoughts. Even having a cigarette can have the association of shifting mental focus.

Mind works to seek its own resolution; energetically being pulled back to source – whether desired or not. Thus, mind is drawn to that break in believing the same thoughts again and again and the capacity for addiction is created.

Mind is finding a way to break the electromagnetic circuit created by repetitive thought in the brain. Using a mantra proves much more effective but it’s not as interesting to the personal ‘I’. It is not social. It’s not a ‘story’ for the ‘I’ thought. Managing thoughts internally instead of through external means (substances) can break a self image and ….well, that’s not too attractive to the ‘I’ who still believes that the outside world is where solutions lie.

It is rare that a substance itself is addictive; generally the body does what mind instructs. Mind imagines that the body needs a cigarette, but, mind has told the body that this is the case. Mind uses the body for its own purposes. The body is no more than an exquisitely functioning bag of flesh and bones. Body does not get addicted, but mind does. Almost all substances are not addictive in and of themselves. It is the alignment of a substance with the pain of identified thoughts coupled with the promise of a mini distraction for mind that are the ingredients of substance addiction.

All sources of pleasure have the capacity to be sources of pain. Sooner or later it is seen that there is a very thin line between pleasure and pain. Both are no more than concepts believed to be true, believed into your experience. Let it be seen that the effort of running a concept reveals itself as exhausting and somewhat unnatural. At this point, the attraction to pleasure and the avoidance of pain are two sides of the same coin and exercising either becomes a futile endeavor.

Believing you are a separate individual will give rise to the belief that you are your habits, tendencies and personality. This can cause great suffering. Building upon this illusion, mind can shift from one intense connection to another; from cigarettes to food, alcohol to AA meetings.

Let the personality be addictive – you are not your personality. You are not addicted to anything. You are not involved in any of this. As long as you run the thought that you are your personality then the ‘I’ has something to fix and something else to do. This will keep the ‘I’ story going. Analysis around addiction can be explored…only to be rejected when seen as more intellectual garbage about an ‘I’ who never existed outside of imagination anyway.

So, what to do? Know that whatever ‘I’; story is running it can never bring you anywhere. You are not an ‘I’ story. You are nothing that can be named. There is no ‘I can’ or ‘I can not’; there is no ‘I’. You drink alcohol, you don’t drink alcohol – this is lifestyle and nothing to do with what you really are.

There is nothing to fix – just observe and stop placing so much effort into the thoughts that are ‘all about me’. Rest in the knowing that you are beyond all of this. Substances are needed to simply change an idea in mind, an experience that happens. Do not be concerned with any of this. It takes an ‘I’ to participate, and you are not an ‘I’.

Scholars and an Olympian explore the importance of purpose and deeper meaning around the topics of performing and winning. “Research shows that having a strong sense of purpose not only helps guide and direct our lives in important ways but adds meaning and fosters resilience.” Scholar Michael Lamb “worries that a culture obsessed with winning—whether in sports, education, or business—can foster cutthroat attitudes and overlook moral excellence and virtues like cooperation and collaboration, which promote flourishing for the whole group.” He “advocates for a broader view of success… He emphasizes qualities such as kindness, humility, justice and courage…” Lamb hopes parents, educators, athletes, and students will incorporate being an excellent human being into performance excellence. It didn’t exactly conform to the rules of the online video contest for up-and-coming singer/songwriters, but when producer Jacob Colgan received 96-year-old Fred Stobaugh’s handwritten lyrics in a mania envelope, it was an entry he couldn’t ignore. Fred penned the song "Oh Sweet Lorraine" in memory of his recently departed wife of 72 years; but, as his letter to the studio said, "I don’t sing. It would scare people." See how Jacob helped bring Fred’s words to the ears of the world.

What Makes Someone Wise? A Global Study Explores.

Unlike previous research that focused mainly on Europe and the United States, a recent study spanned across five continents and eleven countries to analyze perceptions of wisdom. Two dimensions emerged across all cultural regions: “reflective orientation (i.e. thinking logically, emotional control, thinking in many ways, etc.) and socio-emotional awareness (i.e. sense of humor, awareness of bodily expressions, and intellectual humility, etc.).” People associated wisdom more with the reflective orientation. “Interestingly, across all locations, people agreed that thinking logically and reflectively and taking others’ thoughts and feelings into consideration are what makes a person wise.” { read more }

The Londoners Walking Their Way to Better Mental Health

Therapists are creating walking groups to “support people outside of the therapy room, getting us outdoors, off our phones and connecting with new people.” They create intentionality by asking people to: metaphorically leave something behind; have an open mind; be mindful of their surroundings; individually choose a concern on which to focus; and the therapist walks along to help nurture the conversation. In addition to relieving loneliness, people may relate to stories from others similar to their own, and it helps people listen with empathy without a need to “fix”. “Sometimes, taking that first step out of stuck-ness and into movement is the hardest part. So, we’re inviting people to take that first step, together.” { read more }

Arun-dada: I Just Love Thy Silently

Arun Bhatt, lovingly called “Arun-dada”, dedicated his life to simplicity, service, and nonviolence. Born as the son of freedom fighters, Arun-dada spent parts of his childhood in jails, an unlikely setting where he encountered remarkable forces of love. At 19, he walked across India with Gandhi’s spiritual successor, Vinoba Bhave, as part of the Bhoodan (Land Gift) Movement. His untiring equanimity and gentle compassion has dispelled tensions while held at gunpoint, and given rise to remarkable journeys of transformation. He has never sold his labor in all his decades, even after marriage and raising two children. “Nature will give me whatever I need, even if that means suffering,” he notes. Every aspect of his life has been a gift that is offered to, and accepted by him. Arun-dada passed away yesterday, Sept 2, 2024, at nearly 91 years of age. He is remembered by many as a humble ray of light, who quietly blessed all in his presence, without ever trying to. { read more }
