The Yellow Umbrella

The Yellow Umbrella

This animated short film is based on the true story of a little girl in Brazil who visited an orphanage with her mother to bring gifts to the children living there. Her yellow umbrella stirs memories for one little boy of a life and loved ones now lost to him. The revealing of his story touches the little girl, teaching her empathy and kindness. She gives him a gift from her heart that he grows up to repay with his own acts of kindness.

The Marvelous Connections Between Poetry & Medicine

“Sri Shamasunder likes to say he was a poet before he was a doctor. His college mentor, the legendary poet and activist June Jordan, passed away from cancer during his first year of medical school, but had a lasting impact on his practice of medicine. She encouraged him to harness righteous anger and to use his voice to fight inequity, inspiring Shamasunder’s work as a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and as the co-founder and director of the HEAL Initiative, an equity-based global health fellowship that provides quality care for communities in need around the world.” In the following podcast Sri explores the parallels between poetry and medicine, how the HEAL Initiative nurtures “noble friendships” across cultural divides, the influence of his mentors, and more. { read more }
