Thousands Open Their Homes to Ukrainian Refugees

The good neighbor looks beyond the external accidents and discerns those inner qualities that make all men human and, therefore, brothers.

– Martin Luther King Jr. –

Thousands Open Their Homes to Ukrainian Refugees

“As the war rages in Ukraine, an unending stream of horrific imagery flickers across our screens. But go to online platforms such as Host a Sister, Ukraine Take Shelter, Host 4 Ukraine, RefugeBooking, or many other small, local platforms, and you’ll be met with a very different sort of refugee-related content: Offers from people all over the world to help those who have been uprooted and displaced. The outpouring of generosity, kindness and compassion is almost as unexpected as the war.” { read more }

Revolutions and the Politics of Being

We need, in every community, a group of angelic troublemakers.

– Bayard Rustin –

Revolutions and the Politics of Being

Anthony Siracusa studies the power of successful and enduring social movements from the grist of deep life experience. He has spent his life practicing — and then studying and teaching — how ordinary people find courage and the in-dwelling light that compels them to assert their power and humanity in the face of deprivation, dehumanization and injustice not principally as a form of protest, advocacy or activism, but first and foremost as a way of being and living in the world with integrity, of asserting their full humanity. The politics of being rather than strategy or activist tactics has, according to Siracusa, animated the most enduring and transformative social movements in history. What follows is an excerpt from his compelling book, ‘Nonviolence before King: The Politics of Being and the Black Freedom Struggle.’ { read more }

The Need to Grow

The soil is the great connector of our lives, the source and destination of all.

– Wendell Berry –

The Need to Grow

‘The Need to GROW’ is a documentary that powerfully explores the precariousness of life on a planet with rapidly declining farmable soil. The film highlights the stories of three main characters — Alicia Serratos, an 8-year-old Girl Scout; Erik Cutter, a regenerative urban farmer; and Michael Smith an inventor. Serratos spearheads a petition for non-GMO Girl Scout cookies; Cutter aims to cultivate food in a resource-efficient manner; and Smith’s Green Power House invention serves as ‘a closed-loop energy generator that sequesters carbon, grows algae, and produces a nutrient-rich, organic soil vitalizer.’ Learn more here. { read more }

Memnoon: Blessing The One Who Is Asked
by Heather Schlessman

[Listen to Audio!]

2429.jpgOne of the keys to a happier life is doing only what you want to do. We have been taught that is being selfish. That teaching comes from thousands of years of developing a domination over society. We have been taught to do things out of fear of punishment or desire for reward because that is how domination occurs. So it’s going to be a struggle to push against that ingrained teaching and start to live life from the energy of memnoon.

Memnoon is a request that blesses the one who is asked. That takes a moment to sink in. In other words what someone is requesting of me is something that I want to do, and is actually a gift to me. You are giving me a gift by asking me to do something. That’s how much I want to do it. It’s like someone said, “would you do me a favor and take the day off and do whatever you want?” Yes! […]

The hardest thing about saying no, is telling ourselves stories about what others will say. We tell ourselves they will think less of us because we’re not doing what we’re supposed to do.

We have two choices. We can either spend some time figuring out how to see that situation in such a way that we would be coming out of the energy of memnoon, or we can give ourselves empathy that we can’t get to that spot and the best we can do is to say no.

There is something freeing in giving ourselves empathy about it. Anytime we do something because we are supposed to, we are sending out an energy that is not life affirming. We tell ourselves that if everybody said no to things they don’t want to do, no one would give to anyone. But this is the biggest lie. Our greatest need is to contribute to others.

When we give ourselves the power and freedom to only give out of memnoon we discover how joyful it can be. We want to give more and more. Imagine a little child throwing fish food into a koi pond; the joy of watching the fish swirl and pounce on the food. That’s the joy we want to have giving to others. When we can find that in any situation, the giving becomes a gift.

Memnoon: Blessing The One Who Is Asked
How do you relate to the framing of two choices, either coming from memnoon or giving ourselves enough empathy to say no? Can you share a personal story of a time you felt the joy of being blessed by a request? What helps you tap into your power and freedom to only give out of ‘memnoon’?

17 Things I Would Do Differently

If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.
For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.

17 Things I Would Do Differently

On the fifth anniversary of his father’s passing, Eric Jones found himself penning a series of reflections in his journal that would eventually turn into a post titled,”17 Things I would do differently if I were fully convinced I’m going to die.” Brimming with honesty, eloquence, insight and humanness, Eric’s words are an ode to life, inspired by the presence of death. { read more }

“My existence is itself a contradiction. Built by men who waged war for a living. Built to shield children from death by that same war. I am a bomb shelter.” So begins this short, eloquent piece by Sr. Marilyn Lacey, written in the voice of a bomb shelter on the campus of a school for girls in South Sudan. { read more }

Tenderness

We have a tendency to race so quickly through life, that we don’t always make time for ourselves. Carving out a little solitude can make a world of difference. We need to remember to be more gentle, not only with others, but with ourselves too. What miracles might life reveal if we sit quietly with ourselves for ten minutes a day? { read more }

Many of us are looking for ways to slow down, be just where we are and allow our minds to drift. But how to do that and not succumb to guilt for "doing nothing"? Just look up, says Gavin Pretor-Pinney, founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society. As he shares charming photos of nature’s finest aerial architecture, Pretor-Pinney calls for us all to take a step off the digital treadmill, lie back and admire the beauty in the sky above.

How to Awaken Your Inner Healer

Consciousness is not in the body; the body is in consciousness. And you are that consciousness.

– Dan Millman –

How to Awaken Your Inner Healer

“I was half-asleep. It was a few minutes past 5:00 a.m. and the mornings larks were half-asleep, too. The sky was deep indigo. My house was rarely so quiet and still. Id just rolled out of bed, tiptoed to my study for privacy, and turned on my laptop. Teacher Wei Qifeng was on the screen, projecting from over 6,000 miles away in Dali, China, where it was 8:00 p.m. Sporting a shaved head and a perfect set of teeth behind his ear-to-ear smile, he started his session on the mind-body practice of qigong with a soft, yet commanding voice, ‘Relax your intention.’ Relax my intention? I’d always heard the opposite: ‘Strengthen your intention!’ ‘Manifest your intention!’ ‘Harness the power of your intention!’ Besides, it seemed to me that my intention was noble, always focused on the healing of myself, others, and the natural world. Surely, I’d misheard him.” A doctor of internal medicine, Cynthia Li, shares more in this piece about her ongoing journey with Quigong, and the revelations that have come with it. { read more }
