Counter Mapping

The Zuni maps remind all of us that we, too, must take the time to deeply listen, to hear and share stories in which we and the land have equal voice.

– Adam Loften & Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee –

Counter Mapping

The use of maps on our phones and on paper, show border lines and roads that don’t tell the deeper story of the land we live and travel on. Deep within the land are stories of ourselves and our ancestors that can enrich life as we rarely know it. Jim Enote is one such man who knows the soul stories that the land can hold. Jim is a traditional Zuni farmer and director of the A:shiwi A:wan Museum and Heritage Center in New Mexico, USA. He is working with Zuni artists to create maps that bring an indigenous voice and perspective back to the land, countering Western notions of place and geography and challenging the arbitrary borders imposed on the Zuni world. { read more }

We Want Relief. Cure Is Painful
by Anthony de Mello

[Listen to Audio!]

tow3.jpgSpirituality means waking up. Most people, even though they don’t know it, are asleep. They’re born asleep, they live asleep, they marry in their sleep, they breed children in their sleep, they die in their sleep without ever waking up. They never understand the loveliness and the beauty of this thing that we call human existence. You know all mystics — Catholic, Christian, non-Christian, no matter what their theology, no matter what their religion — are unanimous on one thing: that all is well, all is well. Though everything is a mess, all is well. Strange paradox, to be sure. But, tragically, most people never get to see that all is well because they are asleep. They are having a nightmare.

Last year on Spanish television I heard a story about this gentleman who knocks on his son’s door. "Jaime," he says, "wake up!" Jaime answers, "I don’t want to get up, Papa."

The father shouts, "Get up, you have to go to school." Jaime says, "I don’t want to go to school." "Why not?" asks the father. "Three reasons," says Jaime. First, because it’s so dull; second, the kids tease me; and third, I hate school. And the father says, "Well, I am going to give you three reasons why you must go to school. First, because it is your duty; second, because you are forty-five years old, and third, because you are the headmaster." Wake up! Wake up! You’ve grown up. You’re too big to be asleep. Wake up! Stop playing with your toys.

Most people tell you they want to get out of kindergarten, but don’t believe them. Don’t believe them! All they want you to do is to mend their broken toys. "Give me back my wife. Give me back my job. Give me back my money. Give me back my reputation, my success." This is what they want; they want their toys replaced. That’s all. Even the best psychologist will tell you that, that people don’t really want to be cured. What they want is relief; a cure is painful.

Waking up is unpleasant, you know. You are nice and comfortable in bed. It is irritating to be woken up. That’s the reason the wise guru will not attempt to wake people up. I hope I’m going to be wise here and make no attempt whatsoever to wake you up if you are asleep. It is really none of my business, even though I say to you at times, "Wake up!" My business is to do my thing, to dance my dance. If you profit from it fine; if you don’t, too bad! As the Arabs say, "The nature of rain is the same, but it makes thorns grow in the marshes and flowers in the gardens.

In this interview Kelly discusses the unique challenges facing former inmates as they attempt to reintegrate into society, and the people and organizations attempting to change that for the better. Chief among them are former inmates who have gone on to create better lives for themselves, and successfully navigated the hurdles of leaving prison and starting life over. { read more }

What Borders Are Really About

We’re all just walking each other home.

– Ram Dass –

What Borders Are Really About

“The wonderful writer Luis Alberto Urrea says that a deep truth of our time is that we miss each other. We have this drive to erect barriers between ourselves and yet this makes us a little crazy. He is singularly wise about the deep meaning and the problem of borders. The Mexican-American border, as he likes to say, ran straight through his parents’ Mexican-American marriage and divorce. His works of fiction and non-fiction confuse every dehumanizing caricature of Mexicans and of U.S. border guards. The possibility of our time, as he lives and witnesses with his writing, is to evolve the old melting pot to the 21st-century richness of us with all the mess and necessary humor required.” { read more }

Repairing the Fabric of the World

A building is not just a place to be but a way to be.

– Frank Lloyd Wright –

Repairing the Fabric of the World

“I met Jonathan F.P. Rose in Manhattan, the week a snow storm knocked out power in much of the Northeast. Heating by woodstove and carrying water home from the local fire station for five long, cold days left me feeling a bit rough and smoky, not to mention unprepared, to be sitting in the comfortable offices of his company in a historic old building near Grand Central Station. Yet the moment I met Rose, a tall, friendly man who met me talking and moving at a confident stride, I realized that my days as a kind of suburban pioneer woman, muddling along in a harsh new world that everyone blamed on global warming and our decaying infrastructure, was the best possible situation to meet a new kind of green pioneer. The Roses are one of the oldest and most successful real-estate families in New York, well known for their dedication to civic life and for giving back to the place where they gained so much.” { read more }

Dan Millman: No Ordinary Moments in the School of Life

What if everything that happened to you in life was for your highest good and learning? In this riveting talk, Dan Millman, author of The Way of the Peaceful Warrior, shares his insights into the school of life, and how we can approach each of our experiences as opportunities for growth, wisdom, and self-knowledge. “I often use the term ‘spiritual weight-training’ — the difficulties and challenges of everyday life which do arise. That’s what life is about; its spiritual weight training, and we get stronger,” Millman says. Millman defines 12 courses we’re here to master, in order to transcend to a higher spiritual life. Read on to hear him share more on how we can lean into our difficulties, and gain a sense of mastery from the everyday. { read more }

Supporting at-risk communities

Pema is very committed to helping at-risk populations, and thanks to so many of you, The Pema Chödrön Foundation has been able to increase our giving in this area in 2018. This spring, we provided a new grant to Malezi School in Kenya enabling them to provide lunch daily to 220 undernourished children and 9 teachers.

Additionally, the foundation has supported the Peacemaker Fellowship Program in Richmond California, which works to end gun violence. Pema and The Foundation continues to support Homeboy Industries, Prison Mindfulness Institute, iGrow Chicago and Surmang Foundation, among others. Please visit our website to learn more and consider making a contribution here.

Supporting Nuns

One of Pema’s deepest aspirations is that Buddhist nuns are able to receive the full training and education required to fully realize the wisdom of the tradition and to carry it into the future. It is more vital than ever that these nuns receive the same education and support as monks, and Pema is making this a reality. Any donation that you could give to support Pema’s nuns projects would be appreciated tremendously. Read more about the nuns we support:

Tsoknyi Gechak Ling Nunnery

The Book Initiative

With your help, the Book Initiative continues to flourish! The PCF has sent thousands of Pema’s books at no cost to prisons, hospitals, counseling centers, homeless shelters, and individuals. Thanks to a grant from Donaldson Trust, and the support of many of you who have contributed to this project, our outreach has grown exponentially. Please consider supporting this wonderful program here.

In silence there is eloquence. Stop weaving and see how the pattern improves.

One Square Inch of Silence

Gordon Hempton is an acoustic ecologist who has spent over thirty years taking recordings of steadily vanishing natural soundscapes. Quiet places on earth are in danger of disappearing, a message that Hempton brought home in 2010 by marking one square inch of quiet space in Washington’s Olympic National Park with a small red rock. His work was featured in a documentary entitled “Soundtracker” that same year. Since he started recording, he’s found fewer and fewer quiet places in the United States and abroad, signaling an increase in noise pollution and decrease in animal populations. In this video, Hempton talks about his life’s work and what it takes to find and preserve just one square inch of silence. { read more }
