Dan Siegel: The Open Mind

It is never too late to heal the mind and to bring to ourselves and to those around us the compassion and kindness that arise from that healing and integration.

– Dan Siegel –

Dan Siegel: The Open Mind

“For some 2,500 years, humans have located the mind in the brain inside our heads. But we ought to consider the origin of mind with an open mind. Is the mind truly within the brain? Or is this an illusion?” Dan Siegel shares more in this fascinating excerpt from his new book titled “Mind: Journey to the Heart of Being Human”. { read more }

Digital Green: Helping Farmers Through Video

“Today what Rikin Gandhi and his 65-member team do at Digital Green, an independent, non-profit that he heads, is simple: train farmers to make and show short videos where they record their problems, share solutions and highlight success stories. They provide farmers with nifty $200 handheld, battery-operated, small, handheld pico projectors to show the videos to small groups of people in electricity-starved villages. By all accounts, this plain vanilla innovation has been a resounding success.” This article from the BBC shares more. { read more }

The Healing Power of Flowers

Flowers are a gift from nature and have been used throughout the world to bring joy and lighten the heart. ‘Random Acts of Flowers’ (RAF) was born out of the misfortune of one man, Larsen Jay, who was overwhelmed with bouquets of flowers while in hospital. Having never received flowers before, he was inspired by how they made him feel and decided to re-gift them to others. This was the start of an initiative that delivers ‘moments of kindness’ to those in healthcare facilities by gifting re-purposed bouquets as well as an uplifting visit from one of the RAF volunteers.

InnerNet Weekly: Inspirations from ServiceSpace.org
For the Traveler
by John O’Donohue

[Listen to Audio!]

tow4.jpgEvery time you leave home,
Another road takes you
Into a world you were never in.

New strangers on other paths await.
New places that have never seen you
Will startle a little at your entry.
Old places that know you well
Will pretend nothing
Changed since your last visit.

When you travel, you find yourself
Alone in a different way,
More attentive now
To the self you bring along,
Your more subtle eye watching
You abroad; and how what meets you
Touches that part of the heart
That lies low at home:

How you unexpectedly attune
To the timbre in some voice,
Opening in conversation
You want to take in
To where your longing
Has pressed hard enough
Inward, on some unsaid dark,
To create a crystal of insight
You could not have known
You needed
To illuminate
Your way.

When you travel,
A new silence
Goes with you,
And if you listen,
You will hear
What your heart would
Love to say.

A journey can become a sacred thing:
Make sure, before you go,
To take the time
To bless your going forth,
To free your heart of ballast
So that the compass of your soul
Might direct you toward
The territories of spirit
Where you will discover
More of your hidden life,
And the urgencies
That deserve to claim you.

May you travel in an awakened way,
Gathered wisely into your inner ground;
That you may not waste the invitations
Which wait along the way to transform you.

May you travel safely, arrive refreshed,
And live your time away to its fullest;
Return home more enriched, and free
To balance the gift of days which call you.

Wisdom from the Women at Standing Rock

Hold on to what is good,
Even if it’s a handful of earth.
Hold on to what you believe,
Even if it’s a tree that stands by itself.
Hold on to what you must do,
Even if it’s a long way from here.

– Pueblo Prayer –

Wisdom from the Women at Standing Rock

“For months, the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota has become ground for resistance against the construction of a crude-oil pipeline that desecrated sacred burial and prayer sites and threatens the water supply of the surrounding Native American community. The growing encampment of water protectors at Standing Rock has drawn supporters from across the United States amid escalating tensions with authorities.” On Sunday, December 4th the federal administration announced it would block the permit for the pipeline, signaling a victory for the countless people who stood together in solidarity on behalf of the Earth. Earlier this year Filmmaker Shannon Kring headed to Standing Rock with an idea for a documentary — and left with a powerful vision of female strength. { read more }
