Elie Wiesel's Nobel Acceptance Speech

No one is as capable of gratitude as one who has emerged from the kingdom of night. We know that every moment is a moment of grace, every hour an offering; not to share them would mean to betray them.

– Elie Wiesel –

Elie Wiesel’s Nobel Acceptance Speech

Extraordinary Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Elie Wiesel passed away this weekend at 87. He inspired millions with his messages of peace, atonement and human dignity. Maria Popova of Brain Pickings invites us to “Remember this luminous human being with his timeless, increasingly timely Nobel speech on human rights and our shared responsibility in ending injustice.” { read more }

space EditorEditor’s note: Everyone has a deep need to be "seen" as a member of humanity and of the universe, even when they are trying to "hide". Seeing the humanity in everyone, regardless of their situation or circumstance, not only shows a deep level of caring but also shows a reverence for all beings. Simply acknowledging that you "see" someone reinforces our common bonds and opens more doors than we can imagine, as our stories this week help illustrate. –Ameeta space

Thinking Outside the Box

Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.

Thinking Outside the Box

Despite its relative small size, big things are emerging from an innovative idea that is bringing a wealth of knowledge and hope to those living in marginalized communities. The ‘ZubaBox,’ is a shipping container that has been cleverly transformed into a solar-powered internet cafe that provides school children in remote areas “a space that they deserve to improve their learning experience and achieve their goals.” { read more }

Art & Healing: Katherine Sherwood

In art, sublimation refers to the psychological processes of transformation, in which base and unimpressive experiences are converted into something noble and fine — exactly what may happen when sorrow meets art.

– Alain de Botton –

Art & Healing: Katherine Sherwood

UC Berkeley art professor, Katherine Sherwood suffered a serious cerebral hemorrhage paralyzing her right side. Impatient with the slowness of rehabilitation therapy, she decided to go back into the studio and try painting using her left hand. It turned out to be the most effective therapy she could have imagined. And her painting, many agreed, had become better than ever. As she says, “I strongly agree with Oliver Sachs that having a disability, a severe illness, reveals creative parts that you hadn’t known before.” { read more }

A Eulogy for My Mother

We’re here to awaken from the illusion of separateness

– Ram Dass –

A Eulogy for My Mother

“For the first 58 years of my life, I would have to say that my relationship to my mother was a complex and difficult one. She was a huge personality, full of great passions, creativity, rages, and generosity. I remember saying to friends that I loved my mother in small doses, but that she didn’t come in small doses. She was a force of nature.” Celebrated filmmaker Mickey Lemle has shared the stories of some of the most evolved figures of our time. Here, in this candid and moving eulogy, he pays tribute to the extraordinary spirit of his mother Edna, and details the difficult but transformative journey he undertook — to serve the person who brought him into this world, as she transitioned out of it. { read more }

Be The Change

Tune in to a live conversation this Saturday with Mickey Lemle, where he will share more about his remarkable journey, and his just-finished film: “The Last Dalai Lama?” the powerful sequel to “Compassion in Exile” a celebrated documentary he made almost 25 years ago on the fourteenth Dalai Lama.
