Inspiring Quote

We’ve got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant. You can’t just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it’s going to get on by itself. You’ve got to keep watering it. You’ve got to really look after it and nurture it. –John Lennon

Can Connection Cure Addiction?

There is no question that the objects that surround us impact our experience of the world.

– Katherine Center –

Can Connection Cure Addiction?

“It is now one hundred years since drugs were first banned — and all through this long century of waging war on drugs, we have been told a story about addiction…This story is so deeply ingrained in our minds that we take it for granted: There are strong chemical hooks in these drugs, so if we stopped on day twenty-one, our bodies would need the chemical. We would have a ferocious craving. We would be addicted. That’s what addiction means.” The best way to win the drug war might not be police or prisons, argues the author of this article, instead, we should strive to reduce feelings of isolation. { read more }

A Question of Story
by Thomas Berry

[Listen to Audio!]

1002.jpgFor peoples, generally, their story of the Universe and the human role within the universe is their primary source of intelligibility and value. Only through this story of how the Universe came to be in the beginning and how it came to be as it is does a person come to appreciate the meaning of life or to derive the psychic energy needed to deal effectively with those crisis moments that occur in the life of the individual and in the life of the society. Such a story communicates the most sacred of mysteries …. and not only interprets the past, it also guides and inspires our shaping of the future.

* * *

The Universe story is the quintessence of reality. We perceive the story. We put it in our language, the birds put it in theirs, and the trees put it in theirs. We can read the story of the Universe in the trees. Everything tells the story of the Universe. The winds tell the story, literally, not just imaginatively. The story has its imprint everywhere, and that is why it is so important to know the story. If you do not know the story, in a sense you do not know yourself; you do not know anything.

* * *

It’s all a question of story. We are in trouble just now because we are in between stories. The Old Story—the account of how the world came to be and how we fit into it—sustained us for a long time. It shaped our emotional attitudes, provided us with life purpose, energized action, consecrated suffering, integrated knowledge, guided education. We awoke in the morning and knew where we were. We could answer the questions of our children. We could identify crime, punish transgressors. Everything was taken care of because the story was there. But now it is no longer functioning properly, and we have not yet learned the New Story.

–Thomas Berry

About the Author: Thomas Berry was a Catholic priest of the Passionist order, cultural historian, cosmologist and “Earth scholar”. Among advocates of deep ecology and "ecospirituality", he is famous for proposing that a deep understanding of the history and functioning of the evolving universe is a necessary inspiration and guide for our own effective functioning as individuals and as a species.

My Father's Gift

When I was young, I admired clever people. Now that I am old, I admire kind people.

– Abraham Joshua Heschel –

My Father’s Gift

‘Gift’ is a short film that conveys a profound message on the importance of giving, and the true value of wealth. It illustrates how we touch others when we selflessly give of our time, love and kindness. ‘Gift’ is about a boy who grew up believing that his father was poor, unintelligent and unsuccessful. After his father’s death however, the son discovers the true reach of his parent’s generosity, and just how much joy he brought to others. He finally comes to understand the truth of his father’s words: “Being rich is not about how much you have, but how much you can give.” { read more }

The Opposite Of Spoiled & How To Get There

A wise man should have money in his head, but not in his heart.

– Jonathan Swift –

The Opposite Of Spoiled & How To Get There

Many parents walk a fine line when trying to teach children about the importance of money: on one hand, they want to make sure not to spoil their children or raise them with a sense of entitlement; and on the other hand they also want to ensure that their kids don’t grow up too naive or unaware of the role that money plays. In an effort to address this challenge, Ron Lieber, a columnist for The New York Times, offers up some wonderful tips to help parents who want to raise children to have grateful hearts and a healthy relationship to money. { read more }
