One Simple Wish

We must teach our children to dream with their eyes open.

– Harry Edwards –

One Simple Wish

A young child wished for a suit so that he might attend a family member’s funeral. He is just one of more than 250,000 children in the U.S. who enter the foster care system every year. While this system may provide relief to children in need, the impact of being moved from placement to placement can cause a child to lose hope in the simpler things. Luckily, for this child an anonymous benefactor stepped forward to purchase this suit. In just one of many connections made through the website, One Simple Wish. Founded to help grant the wishes of children in foster care, this nonprofit organization has granted more than 6,500 wishes for children living in 42 states. Read more to discover how one woman is bringing hope to the children who need it most of all. { read more }

Be The Change

May is National Foster Care Awareness Month, and the One Simple Wish crew will be embarking on a nationwide wish granting tour. Learn more about their work here. { more }

How To Foster Generosity In Students

Altruism is innate, but it’s not instinctual. Everybody’s wired for it, but a switch has to be flipped.

– David Rakoff –

How To Foster Generosity In Students

In an effort to encourage the innate altruistic tendencies of young students, Vicki Zakrzewski, Ph. D., offers up several key components that she believes can help cultivate a spirit of generosity and kindness. Zakrzewski, the education director of the Greater Good Science Center, which teaches skills that foster a compassionate society, notes that one of the most important – and beautiful – scientific findings is that human beings are naturally inclined toward altruistic behavior. { read more }

The Conditioned: A Sidewalk Poet Finds His Home

There comes that mysterious meeting in life when someone acknowledges who we are and what we can be, igniting the circuits of our highest potential.

– Rusty Berkus –

The Conditioned: A Sidewalk Poet Finds His Home

Raimundo Arruda Sobrinho was a homeless poet, living for decades on a roadway median in Sao Paulo, Brazil, he called “The Island.” Though his circumstances were dire, he wrote each day will diligence and passion. His dream was to share his work with the world; but he lived fundamentally disconnected from others. Or did he? This film speaks to the inherent interconnections among all of us and the astonishing things that can happen when we allow them to manifest. { read more }

Maybe, Said the Farmer
by Author Unknown

[Listen to Audio!]

1011.jpgOnce upon a time there was an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years. One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit. “Such bad luck,” they said sympathetically.

“Maybe,” the farmer replied.

The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses. “How wonderful,” the neighbors exclaimed.

“Maybe,” replied the old man.

The following day, his son tried to ride one of the untamed horses, was thrown, and broke his leg. The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy on his misfortune.

“Maybe,” answered the farmer.

The day after, military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army. Seeing that the son’s leg was broken, they passed him by. The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out.

“Maybe,” said the farmer.

Back in 1997, one person started sending this simple “meditation reminder” to a few friends. Soon after, “Wednesdays” started, ServiceSpace blossomed, and the humble experiments of service took a life of its own. If you’d like to start an Awakin gathering in your area, we’d be happy to help you get started.
